The Winds of Change

My Testimony

The Winds of Change

My first surgical experience was filled with adventures that proved God continues to watch and guide His children.

God Will Direct Your Path

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3: 5-6 NIV)

Before Surgery

On the early morning of April 15, 2019, I completed all the pre-operative preparations. I was fasting from food and water, and I was extremely anxious. My first surgery was a bicep surgery, and I researched recovery tips. What I didn’t expect was my phone to alert (just after I started sleeping, of course). There was a high-wind warning for the area. What should I expect from this? Was my surgery going to be delayed?

Timing is everything!

Since the emergency alert had woken me, I almost felt like I hadn’t gotten any sleep. I believe I was scheduled to be the first patient. Our drive would take well over an hour, so it felt like I was completely exhausted when I woke up. Still, my Sister would be driving for at least an hour to the site in New Jersey

I got into the SUV, and we programmed the GPS for a completely unknown addresss. Before we started the car, we prayed for God’s protection and provision on the journey. We didn’t know how much we would need that supernatural care and protection.

Uncertain Path

We were carefully driving and following the GPS’ directions. Suddenly, the instructions took us off the main road. We were driving in the dark before dawn, along dark, back roads which we never knew existed. Serpentine turns took us around blind curves and down marginally considered roads.
We even slowed down as the roads turned into a ” moonscape” crater experience. As we bumped along the path, the wind started looking like the “tornado” effects from the “It’s a Twister” scene from The Wizard of Oz. As something hit the windshield, we were both startled.

Eventually, we started driving based only on what the GPS said. We listened to the directions as if God, Himself, were directing us. And He did direct us. Our prayers for protection before we left, and the prayers of thanks when we arrived were answered despite the storm around us.

Surgery!

We finally arrived at the surgical center, and we pulled in and PRAYED a prayer of thanks to God. His protections and provision was completely evident. Other than a small rock-strike, the car was fine. We were stunned.

I walked into the surgical center. I thought I researched the surgery and recovery tips, yet I actually had no idea what to expect. I went into the center, and they asked the usual questions before surgery.

I had followed all the instructions, so I underwent bicep surgery.

I felt somewhat vidicated since Worker’s Compensation jad FINALLY authorized surgery. After denying me appropriate medical care for over 1,000 days, I expected to start on my journey to recovery. But, the damage to my other body parts was just too devastating.

Notre Dame’s on Fire!

When I stopped off at the local pharmacy to pick up the post-surgical meds, my Sister went in to pick up the medications. While she was inside, I checked the news and found that the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was engulfed in flames. The iconic spire was compromised and would probably collapse. This eventually destroyed the ancient cathedral’s building structure. I was stunned.

I was a child when my parents took me to Paris, and I had seen various pictures of the structure. There were ancient Christian icons, statues, and treasures inside, and it appeared that they would be destroyed. The Notre Dame Cathedral was built over a thousand years ago. Statues, bells, and icons were in jeopardy, and there was questions about whether the structure would hold. My surgery seemed relatively minor compared to this fire.

Do Thirty More!!

I started my physical therapy with great optimism. I was eager to work to become pain free, so I selected a major therapy provider.

After the intake interview, I started therapy. Everytime I was unable to do the exercises, I notified the therapist that I needed modifications due to pain. I kept getting told to restart and do 30 more. The therapist kept stating that she woulld notify my employer. “You mean the employer that I resigned from?” Whenever I walked out, I was in more pain and couldn’t sleep from the pain.

After months of this torture, I demanded that the therapist massage my shoulder and neck either before or after to reduce the pain. When she actually did this, she found that my cervical vertabrae were reverse, and she told me to never come back. I didn’t argue with that!
